Three Gymnopedies
Satie, the eccentric of early twentieth-century Parisian art life, has composed a wonderful wealth of piano pieces. The best known of these compositions are Trois gymnopedies (1888) and Gnossennies(1890). These short pieces of music are now counted among the gems of piano literature. The unusual thing about the short piano works is that it seems as if just a few chords have been written with a random melody line above them. Satie took little account of the usual harmony requirements. In the meantime, the 'Satie pieces' have taken on a life of their own and can actually be compared with nothing and no one. Satie's piano music is nowadays considered to be Impressionism.
Originally the word Gymnopédie is Greek. Gymnopedia was a dance performed in ancient times in Sparta.
