Historical Harp Collection vol. 3
Medieval and Renaissance Songs and Dances.
During the Renaissance, there was a constant exchange of musical ideas across boundaries, as court musicians travelled around the continent in royal entourages. Royal chapels and courts employed foreign musicians — the English lutenist Dowland at the Danish court and Franco-Flemish lutenist Van Wilder working for Henry VIII — leading to further interaction, with melodies shared.
Many of the same songs and dances appear in music collections of different countries, for instance, Byrd's 'La Volta' in England and Praetorius"Volte' in Germany.
